“The Waking Hour” is the second album by AGE OF ARTEMIS. The first CD published in 2012 titled “Overcoming Limits” was promising. I believe they now have succeeded in summarizing all the elements in a more coherent ensemble with vivid refinements. The wise guys from Power Prog Records are proud to announce the up coming release of the second longplayer by this high potency Progressive Metal outfit, through their label!

On the strength of their well-received debut album, Overcoming Limits, Brazil’s Age of Artemis returns with The Waking Hour, and you can likely toss away any references to that other famous Brazilian power metal band, Angra.

While the traditions of melodic heavy and power metal still form the foundation of AoA’s music, they’ve definitely bumped up the progressive metal elements. The difference is that the band is not weirdly technical, trying to both impress and confuse their listener. The structure of the songs don’t sacrifice melody and groove or giving you solid heavy/power metal, while they toss in their twists and turns. Under The Sun and Broken Bridges, two early songs are prime examples of this; the latter having an almost pop accessibility in the midst of the prog power.

C’est bientôt la coupe du monde Football. Vous n’y échapperez pas plus que moi, à moins de vous astreindre à un carême médiatique en règle pendant les quelques semaines qui arrivent. On nous parle du Brésil, de son amour pour le sport, de ses réticences à accueillir les touristes en manque de ballon rond sur fond de climat social douloureux. Mais voilà, n’en déplaise aux footeux qui me lisent, le Brésil, ne l’oublions pas, c’est aussi et surtout Angra ! Entre autres, certes, mais tout de même : Brésil, terre de métaux ! Au pluriel, oui, parce qu’il n’y a pas qu’Angra dans la vie, y a Age Of Artemis aussi, qui nous délivre cette année un succulent power progressif de haute volée.

The Brazilian band Age Of Artemis was formed in 2008 by  drummer Pedro Senna with the Alirio Netto (vocals), Nathan Grego (guitar),Gabriel Soto(guitar) and Giovanni Sena (bass). The band originally was named simply Artemis but then renamed due to another band in Brazil had the same name. In the 2011-2012 the band  with the help of the producer Edu Falaschi (ex-Angra, Almah) has released their debut album “Overcoming Limits” that presented decent Symphonic Power Metal with Prog elements in style of Angra. This release got very positive acclaims and Age of Artemis became a new Brazilian Metal hope. Since then the musicians have recorded the follower “The Waking Hour” which will be released by  Power Prog Records, July 18th 2014.

Consolidando sua carreira com o segundo disco, o Age of Artemis aposta sério no trabalho do novo álbum e mostra uma maturidade e evolução mais do que nítida. E o que já era bom ficou melhor ainda. É, digamos que um tanto diferente do épico, poderoso e veloz, ‘Overcoming Limits. E a opinião do ‘Melhor’ pode e vai divergir de cada um que ouvir, acredito que pelo estilo. Mas uma coisa é inegável, a qualidade só aumentou, e o que vemos aqui é a busca pela personalidade mais forte, e o jeitinho brasileiro de de fazer Metal.

Apesar da sonoridade não ser inédita, a forma na qual o Age of Artemis a coloca em prática é sólida, contagiante, fugindo de excessos e firulas que tantas vezes tornaram o power, prog e melódico enjoativos pra tantos metalheads, resultando em músicas cujas melodias são bem trabalhadas, sim, mas nada que passe da medida ou seja esnobe, “feito para aparecer”. E esse paradoxo no mínimo interessante faz toda a diferença no resultado final.

  • Power Of Metal
“The Waking Hour” is one of the heavier songs with a more aggressive singing style, but with a very almost poppy refrain. After the piano intro the song “Hunger and Shame” turns into an emotional serene song reminding me a bit of Dream Theater. In “Melted in Charisma”, “Childhood” and “Your Smile” some Brazilian tribal influences are used again and they make me think of Angra again.

Lo splendido debutto “Overcoming limits” uscito nel 2011 in Brasile e solo due anni più tardi in Europa, è stato uno dei miei dischi dell’anno a suo tempo, e l’attesa per questo come back era altissima. “The waking hour” si presenta con una (finalmente) bella copertina di Machado e con una produzione potente e pulita. Il tocco prog è presente grazie soprattutto ad alcune linee melodiche e all’uso della tastiera ma si può incontrare qua e là anche il sound tipico brasiliano (che riporta a dischi come “Rebirth” degli Angra) con l’uso di alcuni strumenti tipici e percussioni, e le songs non sono così immediate come solitamente capita con alcune band sudamericane dedite a questo genere. Le composizioni degli Age of Artemis sono ben studiate, forse necessitano di qualche ascolto per essere comprese del tutto, ma convincono anche questa volta ad iniziare da “Under the sun” brano che presenta sonorità tribali e che inizia il disco in maniera grintosa.

Se com “Overcoming Limits” (2011), o grupo brasiliense já havia provado a sua competência em fazer um Power Metal sofisticado, com “The Waking Hour” ele dá um passo a frente na criatividade. Produzido no Norcal Studio (SP), por Brendan Duffey e Adriano Daga, o novo material do Age Of Artemis soa uma pouco mais livre do que o ‘debut’. A arte de capa é assinada pelo colombiano Felipe Machado Franco (Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Rhapsody Of Fire). Piano, sintetizadores e instrumentos de percussão têm espaço neste trabalho que alguns podem achar ousado, isto porque o quinteto não tem vergonha de mesclar baladas cheias de suavidade e experimentalismos com faixas mais pesadas e clássicas do gênero.

Os que haviam aprovado a estréia podem respirar aliviados, pois o Age Of Artemis passou no teste do segundo trabalho e com louvores! The Waking Hour supera seu antecessor em todos os aspectos. Com muito mais maturidade e personalidade, conseguiram escapar da armadilha dos excessos que tornam muitas bandas do estilo para lá de enjoativas e, além disso, utilizaram muitíssimo bem elementos percussivos típicos da nossa cultura. Nesse ponto, muitos certamente irão se recordar do Angra da fase Holy Land, por mais que a execução da ideia se dê de forma diferente.

Heimat hemmungslos herumflennender Profifußballer und herumzappelnder Karnevalsärsche – ist allgemein nicht gerade als Hochburg gut gemachten Heavy Metals bekannt, erfolgreiche Landsmänner hin oder her. Umso mehr darf der Hörer staunen, dass mit „The Waking Hour“ von eben dort eine junge Band namens AGE OF ARTEMIS ein derart erstklassiges Geschoss abgefeuert hat.

  • The Heavy Metal Underground
Musically, The Waking Hour takes the traditional Melodic Power Metal formula and adds in some progressive elements that help make this album stand out from the rest of the pack. “Melted in Charisma” and “Childhood ” which showcase their more progressive side. On the other hand you have tracks that show that Age Of Artemis is still a Power Metal band and “The Waking Hour,” “Hunger and Shame,” and “New Revolution” are prime examples of why the genre is getting as popular as it is.

Após uma bem sucedida estreia com “Overcoming Limits”, a banda brasilienseAGE OF ARTEMIS retorna com seu novo trabalho, “The Waking Hour”, que certamente dividirá opinião entre os fãs do grupo, principalmente os que esperavam um álbum com direcionamento musical voltado para o Power Metal.

Mesmo possuindo a voz marcante de Alirio Netto, um dos candidatos mais fortes para assumir a voz do Angra antes da entrada do italiano, seria uma tremenda injustiça não destacar todo o time de músicos, principalmente o baterista Pedro Senna e o guitarrista Nathan Grego, que desempenham muito bem os seus respectivos papeis durante todo o disco. Essa citação inicial está, intrinsecamente ligada, à mudança radical no estilo da banda que, como citado anteriormente, deixou o Power Metal de lado, apostando em estruturas modernas, baladas emocionais bem no estilo Dream Theater de compor, e elementos étnicos muito bem inseridos.
